Re: Difference Between Coal and Wood Burning Fireplaces. That's an old wood-burning design - colonial times, and TOTALLY safe. Unless, by chance, it's a Rumford. As the hub of the house, a burning hearth provided heat, housed multiple fires for cooking and baking, and served as the nucleus of family gatherings. Standard fireplaces are typically short and deep compared to Rumford fireplaces.
Rumford fireplaces are tall and shallow to reflect more heat, and they have streamlined throats to eliminate turbulence and carry away the smoke with little loss of heated room air.
They generally begin with an overly big, deep firebox - the part you place the wood in, where it actually burns. Traditionally, a Rumford fireplace is characterized by a tall, shallow firebox designed to reflect heat out into a room instead of letting it all go up the chimney with the smoke. Performance tests indicate that the radiated and reflected heat output from a Rumford fireplace is higher than that from a conventional fireplace.
