It is true stay away from boarder towns, if you want to do a short trip you can try Monterrey.
The price of flights around Christmas time is very high so maybe the bus is a better option ??
I drove from Houston to Cancun in November 2011. The Colombia bridge can save you well over an hour in each direction.
