Ruby Nell Bridges was born on September 8, 1954, in Tylertown, Mississippi. Ruby's family moved to New Orleans in 1958 when Ruby was four. When she was just 6, her parents volunteered her to participate in integration of the New Orleans School system. In 1960, Ruby Bridges's parents were informed by officials from the NAACP that she was one of only six other African-American students to pass the test. When the first day of school rolled around in September, Ruby was still at her old school. Her grandparents were both sharecroppers, they rented the land they farmed on.
