This new poetry does not follow the great system or fixed rules of poetry. Name “Movement” was given to a group of poets and Philip Larkin was one of them. He earned his BA from St. John’s College, Oxford, where he befriended novelist and poet Kingsley Amis and finished with First Class Honors in English.
After graduating, Larkin undertook professional studies to become a librarian. It is necessary to differentiate modern poetry form the poetry of movement before adjudging Philip Larkin as a modern poet. Poets of movement were anti-modernist. LARKIN is known as the movement poet. In other words, the ethos of the Movement can only be found in the works of the poets associated with it. In the introduction to this anthology, ROBERT CONQUEST wrote that these poems were quite different from the poems written in the thirties and forties.
This new poetry is free from mystical and logical elements. The term “Movement” refers to the work of a group of poets of the nineteen-fifties. With his second volume of poetry, The Less Deceived (1955), Larkin became the preeminent poet of his generation, and a leading voice of what came to be called "The Movement," a group of young English writers who rejected the prevailing fashion for neo-Romantic writing in the style of Yeats and Dylan Thomas. These poets were John Wain, Donald Davie, Kingsley Amis, Thorn Gunn, and a few others too. Of all the poets of the Movement, it was Philip Larkin who gained the celebration and admiration of Robert Conquest who championed him and considered him an incarnation of all the principles of the Movement and an outstanding epitome of what Philip Larkin was also one of the poets believed to be intimately related to the Movement. In the end, one can say that LARKIN belongs to a group of poets who started a poetic movement in England in the fifties of the 20th century, therefore he has set up his reputation as a great poet in modern England yet he is against the techniques of modern poetry and he strongly rejects it. Philip Larkin was born in Coventry, England in 1922.
