Red October Meaning,
(Marcel Vander Wier/OHS Canada) Frigid Arctic air has swept across most of Western Canada, delivering bone-chilling cold to much of Saskatchewan, all of Alberta, large sections of Yukon, Northwest Territories and, most uncharacteristically, much of British Columbia.
This is the first major cold snap this winter for most of Yukon, with extreme cold warnings through the central and northern portions of the territory. Snag, 30 kms east of the Alaska-Yukon border and 25 kms north of the Alaska Highway had an aviation connection when the record was set on 3 February 1947. Snag was created as an emergency landing field as part of the Northwest Staging Route. The record for the coldest recorded temperature in North America is held by a tiny locale in the Yukon, at-81.4° Fahrenheit (-63° Celsius). That beats the previous record of 83.43 megawatts set on Dec. 18, 2013. The City of Whitehorse is in the midst of a frigid cold snap.
Yukoners consumed a peak of 83.69 megawatts at 5:53 p.m. that day. Yukon gobbled record power during Monday’s cold snap As temperatures dropped Monday, Yukon used a record amount of energy.
