By the time he was killed in Normandy, aged only twenty-four, in June 1944, Keith Douglas had achieved a body of work that has earned him the reputation as the most brilliant and promising poet of the Second World War.

douglas is an excellent poet who writes in rhyme and meter but his diction and mastery of meter brings a hard edge to many of his poems, as well as a beauty in relating a soldier's sense of fear and loss in battle.
